The Information and Consultation Directive, established a general framework setting out minimum requirements for the right to information and consultation of employees in undertakings or establishments within the European Community. It is implemented in the UK in March 2005.

This programme is designed to support the effective development of representation skills in meetings for ongoing consultation purposes.

By the end of this 2 day session you will be able to:

  • Acknowledge any legal requirements associated with membership of your employee representative group.

  • Relate communication best practice to formal consultation arrangements.

  • Confirm your own responsibilities when representing the views of others.

  • Distinguish between majority decision-making and consensus.

  • Define your role and collectively agree the interpersonal approaches associated with success as an employee representative.

  • Identify the current effectiveness of your representative forum as a cohesive team.

  • Relate your role to the delivery of wider service excellence in your organisation.

  • Identify any potential barriers to team cohesion.

  • Develop a compelling vision for your consultation group.

  • Work together to achieve a challenging task through collective application.

  • Identify a range of techniques to encourage the constructive exchange of views.

  • Isolate and respond to inactive listening signals.

  • Distinguish between personal style and personal agenda.

  • Achieve a balance between wider organisational needs and personal motivations.

  • Build cabinet responsibility and promote sustainable ownership of agreed outcomes by all parties.
